Royer. A world apart.

Engineer Ernst Royer, born in 1926, a true-blue Schladming boy from a poor family, founded a highly successful construction company in Vienna practically out of nothing, specializing in railway construction. After having opened a restaurant called the Styrian Rauchkuchl in Schladming, he decided with encouragement from the Schladming population, to enrich tourism through the construction of a hotel at the beginning of the 1970s.

Our hotel with 65 rooms was opened with great pomp and ceremony in the presence of many eminent figures in January 1975. The first extension in the South wing was needed due to the hotel’s popularity. At the same time the indoor pool was built in cooperation with the town of Schladming. With the staging of the Alpine Ski World Cup 1982 in Schladming, Royer decided to continue extending the hotel as a private World Cup initiative.

Beginning of construction of a large hotel expansion, which included enlarging the restaurant, inclusion of a rotisserie, the addition of an indoor tennis court and a parking garage, as well as doubling the room capacity. The enlarged hotel opened just in time for the beginning of the world championship season as an official FIS hotel and many international greats of sport, politics, business and society were welcomed at this event in the new Royer.

In the following years the hotel became a popular holiday destination for guests from all over the world, and many became loyal customers who regularly return to the Sport Hotel.

Of course further investment was needed and so the bar was rebuilt in 1987, the golf training facility built in 2002 and from 2001 to 2006 all 130 hotel rooms, the main restaurant and the sauna and relaxation area were completely renovated and modernized. Almost all the facilities were upgraded with state of the art technology: the rooms have a modern card-closing system and broadband Internet connections, the entire heating system was converted to eco-friendly community heating, our ski room offers modern shoe drying equipment, all dispensing and cooling systems are completely modern, and the fire alarm system with 1,070 (!) smoke detectors is up to date, etc, etc, etc!

before the high point of 2013, the Alpine Ski World Cup in Schladming (in which we were the official FIS hotel for the second time), the Royer was still diligently being improved: a new lift in the main building, hotel bar, cigar lounge, main entrance, as well as our Steirerstüberl restaurant were completely renovated. In addition, all seminar rooms were given a new look.
2014 was not without results. We built a large bus parking area in spring and in autumn our hotel reception was re-designed, our underground car park tweaked and many rooms were renovated. Petra Pitzer also opened a hair salon in our hotel on 4^th November 2014, where our guests are of course welcome.

In 2019 the Sporthotel underwent major structural changes. In autumn the facade was given a complete face-lift. The enormous concrete troughs of the balconies were removed and all rooms were equipped with glass balconies, which now offer an even better view of the stunning landscape of Schladming. The new colour concept and the integration of typical regional materials such as wood and metal give the Sporthotel a modern cosiness!

The terraces around our popular Steirerstüberl have also been redesigned, inviting you to relax and enjoy the food and drinks!
You will be able to enjoy your breakfast, your afternoon snack or your dinner on our newly designed restaurant terrace.
Or simply lose yourself in the sunset.

Not a year goes by that Ing. Royer and his daughter and successor Mag. Julia Royer making sophisticated investments to expand and improve the Hotel Royer. 
With the support of his closest employees and his family, Ing. Royer is still personally concerned about the well-being of our guests.

In March 2020 Ing. Royer was appointed to honorary citizen, due to his merits for the touristic development of Schladming
