On the hikes in the Schladminger Tauern, not only do numerous managed alpine cabins invite you to take a break with delicious regional delicacies, you can also expect 300 mountain lakes with crystal-clear water, over 100 large and small waterfalls, high alpine water landscapes as well as healing springs and powerful places.
Our personal hiking highlights for you
Discover the imposing Riesach Waterfall, the highest in Styria. The masses of water thunder two stages and 140 meters to the valley below. Highlight: alpine trail with steel suspension bridge.
This hiking tip is a leisurely, short mountain hike to a beautiful destination – the “Spiegelsee”, meaning Mirror Lake. Its original name is actually Mittlerer Gasslsee, but over the last 30 years, many photo-loving hikers have re-christened it.
In a wonderful setting, whenever winds are calm it serves up the most beautiful reflections imaginable. If you stand on the south shore, you are treated to an amazing reflection of the south face of the Dachstein Massif! The colors are spectacular from mid June on, when the rhododendron come into full bloom (Rhododendron Festival), delightful summer scenery in July and August, while the golden-yellow larches of October bring us magnificent contrasts. We are but a short climb from the Obersee, a small Ice-Age tarn, picturesquely and peacefully nestled in the rearmost cirque at the foot of the Rippetegg and Pichler Schober. Magnificent panoramic views of the Dachstein and Bischofsmütze.
A very varied route, whereby the trail through Talbachklamm gorge is suitable for prams. On the way you can grab a snack at Landalm Inn, Hotel Landauer or (in case you take the variante via Rohrmoos) at Rohrmooser Schlössl inn. Highlights are Talbachklamm gorge itself and lookout platforms in the gorge and in the village of Untertal.
The trail to Untersee Lake is a beautiful easy hike for families. Starting at Reiteralmsee Lake the hike leads through a clear forest to Untersee Lake. On the way to the Lake you pass by two tarns, where wooden benches invite you to sit down and to enjoy the scenery for a bit. At Untersee Lake you can cross the lake on a wooden float and enjoy the scenery from a viewing platform. Around the lake, several wooden benches invite for a break at the lake. A couple of opportunites to play with the water are waiting for the kids as well.
